Natural fruit fly trap recipe made from stuff already in your kitchen
Fruit flies are super annoying. Ever wondered, “How to I get rid of fruit flies?” The answer is to make a simple homemade fruit fly trap. My natural fruit fly trap recipe works well, takes less than 2 minutes to set up, and is made from stuff you already have in your kitchen right now.
Homemade Fruit Fly Trap Materials
Here is the short list of stuff you need (and probably already have in your kitchen) to make your fruit fly trap.
-
A drinking glass, jar, or cup. I use a clear glass because I like to see how many flies I caught.
-
Roll of tape. I used blue painters tape but any type will do.
-
A funnel.
-
Some vinegar, wine, or some kind of sweet liquid that attracts the pesky fruit flies.
Homemade Fruit Fly Trap Assembly
-
Fill the glass with a half an inch or so of the bait (I used red wine but vinegar works well too).
-
Place the funnel in the glass so that the end is not touching the liquid.
-
Tape the lip of the glass to the funnel so that the fruit flies can’t escape.
-
Leave your awesome homemade fruit fly trap on the counter overnight and wait for the little buggers to find it. TIP: Place the trap near the source of your problem: rotting fruit? trash can?
-
The next morning, check your fruit fly trap and rejoice.
How this Simple Homemade Fruit Fly Trap Works
Fruit flies smell the liquid bait and fly down into the funnel. Once inside the glass they can’t find their way back out and end up drowning in the bait. I used red wine in my homemade trap so at least the fruit flies died happy.
